Do you overthink things? Me, too. (I’m a little weird about locking doors. I’m a double/triple door-lock checker!)
Thinking about overthinking makes me think of (bear with me here) voicers I see struggling to make their reads ‘perfect.’ I’m here to tell you that a perfect read is impossible. Heck, perfection is impossible! Who is your ‘perfect’ read for, anyway? You? Your client? Your cat? Millions of listeners?
What we do is so subjective. I always like to say that the ‘perfect’ read is whatever the client wants! And one client’s idea of ‘perfect’ is completely different from another client’s idea of perfection. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” perfect read.
So, when you’re auditioning, simply submit a read you feel GOOD about. (Or–if you’re in the very beginning of your VO journey—good-ish! We all have to start somewhere!)
It’s about doing your best, not trying to be perfect. You’ll drive yourself crazy if you seek perfection because, remember, there’s no such thing!
The next time you’re in the booth, instead of asking yourself, “Is this read perfect?” ask yourself, “Did I do the best I’m capable of doing in this read? Is this a read I’d be proud to send to a potential client?” If the answer is yes, then you’ve nailed it!
Good advice, thanks Mama VO!
